HD6970 running hotter than common? Stuttering as a result

I have a HD6970 that im looking to replace soon anyway but im wondering if my card is running hotter than the usual card. With my one monitr enabled i get around 50c with the card at 27%. Full load it can get to the 90's etc but the fan kicks in getting louder cooling it down sometimes it can get to the 100c and the card starts stuttering and gets fairly annoying.

When i run with my two monitors enabled, this is just an extra monitor to watch movies or when im working an extra screen comes in hand, with this i have to enable the fan to 50% to keep it at 60c, with this it hits that 100c stutter fest much quicker and easier so to combat that when in games i run the card at 65% that is pretty loud for me though sometimes i have headsets on that dampens the sound, anyway running it at 65% keeps the temps at 91c give or take a few up and down.

I would suggest that the cooler on that card is not working properly. It may be spinning up but the fact that you are hitting 100s suggests that it just can't cope with the heat it is producing, or perhaps the fan curve is compromised as you should be hitting near 100% fan when it reaches 100 deg C.

Has it always been like this? If not then it may have clogged with dust. Might be worth popping the cooler off if it isd a reference blower cooler and getting rid of the dust at this point, especially if you wish to sell it off.

I cant really say it has always been like this but the sometimes stuttering issues has been around for awhile since around Sniper Elite V2 came out is when i noticed it.

Thanks for the advice though, im going to put this card in my other build when i get my new card, it wont be used as much for heavy games only emulator games so it wont be an issue anymore but i will deffintly try to give it a good clean by taking fan out.

If you are taking the cooler off for a clean, you might as well try applying some new paste onto it as well. Should drop temps by a little.

I would take a look in CCC, go to your fan controls and look at the way it's setup.

Also how good is your case in terms of airflow? Do you have a side case fan? Could be things worth considering if you want to take this further and drop temps

I have an HAF-X. I actually got an HAF-X to combat the graphics cards temps and it appeared to work for awhile but then the card starting getting hotter and so on.

Nothing abnormal to report on the graphics fan area though. Its currently at 50%, clock speeds are normal, memory is set to always at 1375MHz but thats because i have the two monitors plugged in.

50%. On both graphics cards I've had with stock coolers (one Vapor-x and one reference) that was far too loud for even gaming use. You should be able to have your card running in dual screen mode and have it a lot less than 50%. Even in dual monitor mode the card doesn't do a lot of work compared witg 3D modes.

Well it pushes the Memory clock speed default from 250MHz idle to 1375MHz idle so it's going to get hotter due to that, i've even asked XFX about this and they said it was perfectly normal for the card to get in the high 50's and for the card to auto-clock it'self when two monitors and connected to the graphics card.
