Would like to know if it is possible to trifire a 6990 card with a hd6950 card that has been unlocked using bios flash?

An unlocked hd6950 has the same shader count as a hd6970 so I am guessing it will work, but would like to know if any one has actually done it?

Thank you.

EDIT: meant to say "shader unlocked HD6950" :)

Yes you can.

An unlocked HD 6950 is essentially just a HD 6970.

You can CrossFire the HD 6990 with a standard HD 6950 as well.

You may have had issues but i have used

5970 and 5850 trifire and it worked fine
6990 and 6950 unlocked abd it worked fine

Glad it worked for you. I doubt it worked well for BF3... or any other recent game. Happy to be proven wrong though.

Most people with trifire say its more trouble than its worth
Was gaming a smooth experience for you guys who have tried it?

Any sort of multiGPU setup (CF, TF or QF) will cause issues somewhere. You'll be forcing GPU usage with recent games, which are console ports

SO the problems some of you having are not to do with an unlocked 6950 can't be used with 6990 - but to do with GPU usage and/or stuttering?

The 6950 unlocked or not, can be used in TriFire, any card in 69 series can be Cross/Tri/QuadFired together.

The problems folks are talking about is the potential TriFire scaling/problems above and beyond potential scaling/problems with CrossFire.

Yes, this. Sorry to be unclear. It'll work but don't say I didn't warn ya bruv ;)

Post a screenshot showing 99% GPU usage on Caspian and I'll shut up ;)
CPU throughput problems could cause this, not necessarily GPU config. I'll show you a screenie later on Caspian 5760x1080 with Quadfire at 95% give or take on all cores if you like ;) I've never seen 99% on any game apart from Heaven benchmark... and that includes a single 6950/6970 etc.
