HD6990

Depending what you play its probably just a shade above a clocked 7970/680, but then you have crossfire to contend with too...

What price are you looking at for the 6990?

As if its closely priced to the 7970/680 I would just opt for one of those instead.

How would one of these stack up to the latest and greatest cards?

Would it be worth getting one over a similar priced card?

IMO, no, it wouldn't.

It's not significantly cheaper than the current gen for multi card to be worth it over single new card

There is one going in the MM for £270

Could be a tempting buy, but I recently sold my 7970 on the MM for £280, and I've seen 680's for ~£360 so its a tough call.

Are you going to leave it air cooled or under water?

If you want the Crossfire route, 2 x used 6950's will perform just as well as a 6990 and come in cheaper, alternatively a pair of 7850's with a mild overclock will beat a 6990 for a similar price ;)

But of course the 6990 has the advantage of dual slot tri/quad fire should you need it.

That's the problem I think I might have, it's going to be air cooled only.

Does anybody know of any problems with this card apart from heat/noise?

Heat/Noise/Crossfire.

If the heat and noise become an issue I'm fairly sure Arctic Cooling have an aftermarket cooler designed especially for the 6990, but I wouldn't imagine its that bad.

Crossfire comes down to personal experience IMO, some have had a nightmare with it, some have had no issues. I've had a bit a both, but once I got my head around it I quite enjoyed it.

I'd see if you can whittle the seller down to closer the £260 mark and take it, if you want to check the anadtech performance (Doesn't list the 6990) charts it, at stock, lies somewhere between CF 6950's and CF 6970's. Will handle the most demanding of games at 1080 at relative ease :)

I never realised they were that loud. I found my 5970 on air was pretty unbareable and from that Toms Hardware chart its a fair bit louder

Thanks for the replies people. I think I may give this one a miss, the noise is just too much of a pain for me, and I'm not planning on w/c for this year anyway.

Noise is not a problem. I had a 6990 and a 6970 - please don't listen to people who haven't actually had one!

But there are better cards now. 6990 is a beast though!

Kind of what I was thinking, it is still a monster of a card, for £270 id have it in a heart beat.

I game with surround headset on so I dont really care if the fans loud when under load.
