Hi, could anyone offer me some advice please on max temps for the HD7970? I've oc'd up to 1125core 1500vram and temps running @ 89c with fan speed 60%. Was thinking of creating custom fan speed profile to keep it lower than 89c if that is a little too high for the card?

I would say it on the high side that temp is it after gaming or benching?

If your card an AMD reference one most reviews show up to 78C under load?

If you can stand the noise increase the fan speed and creating a custom fan speed profile to keep it lower than 89C.

What is yout temp with no O/C on the card?

Do you have a case with good air flow?

I would run HWMonitor to check what other temperatures are inside your case.

thanks simon, that temp is under 100% load - idle is 60c. i've got good airflow through the case, CPU @ load 50c / idle 30c mobo chipset varies from 28 to 32c Room temp is quite warm though. It is the MSI reference card.

That idle temp is high I would expect high 30C or low 40C.

That must be with a low fan speed setting.

Are you using MSI Afterburner to overclock your card?

If yes what are you other readings.

I am running with a custom Fan speed profile.

Your CPU and Mboard temps look OK

Run your card at the standard settings and report your temps

Yes, I am using MSI Afterburner and Kombuster for GPU stress.

Reset to default (1010core 1375ram Vcore1049mV Power Limit +/- 0%).
After 5mins stress 80c (fan@45%) after 5mins idle 56c (fan@21%).

Using the OC profile (1125core 1500ram Vcore1174mV Power Limit +20%)
After 5 mins stress 91c (fan@57%) after 5mins idle 66c (fan@33%)

What sort of max and idle temps do you think I should be running at? I will play about with a custom fan speed profile to try and achieve them. Maybe compromise with the oc a bit too.

Sorry for double-post. Tried a custom fan profile using same testing as above and now have:

OC profile: Load - 81c (fan@73%) and Idle - 62c (fan@36%).

On default: Load - 79c (fan@67%) and Idle - 55c (fan@30%)

That looking much better with the custom fan profile, that the way to go.

Max I would want running is approx 80C, lower the better

Have you tried lowering your Vcore on the O/C?

Cool, so the 80c mark is about right then for 100% load? No, I've not tried lowering the vcore, will do some stability tests later today.

Yes aim for 80C with 100% load is good, games will run at lower temps.

Your idle temp is higher than I would expect can you please check in MSI Afterburner to see what is your core and memory readings at idle should be dropping down?

I just notice that you are running 3 monitors that why your idle temp is higher your core and memory readings will also be higher.

I thought the idle temps were a bit high then i noticed you have eyefinity so i would say they are about right, if you unplug two monitors i bet the idle temps will drop to mid 30's

Solved and thank you. Got voltage down to 1080mV and stable, put a stronger fan in side of case too. Now have 73c on oc profile under load with fan speed at 49% and 53c idle with fan speed of 33%. Dropping the voltage made biggest difference :)

That good news.

Still high for a 7970, which flavour do you have?
