HD8800 Series Coming

I honestly can't understand those who don't want the new cards to be "too good", so that your existing cards are obsolete.

In other words, is "too much progress too quickly" something you guys actually worry about?

It's quite funny that the people that currently have the top cards, are pretty much the most likely to buy the top end cards again, pretty silly to not want a big improvement tbh.

That's not funny at all and I won't be buying a new card on release either. There wont be a big improvement anyway. Nowadays AMD and Nvidia seem pretty happy to release a new series with 10-20% gains over their predecessors and charge £100 more.

information going round was that nvidia and thus amd overpriced their stuff this gen thanks to low silicon yields from tsmc, no? it's supposed to be fixed around december, and the 7xxx series has also consistently been dropping in price. both price cuts and this kind of performance increase were being speculated about a lot for 8xxx, so i'm not surprised if these specs turn out to be true. happy with my 7950 anyway, couldn't have gone another several months without a gpu

It was only this morning that I was considering ordering a 7950, but then realised the 8*** series shouldn't be too far around the corner now.

Should be interesting, will save me upgrading late in a gen.~

Although this all does sound like pre-release rumours, I seriously doubt they hold water.

It's not a case of "wanting" it. Of course, everyone wants the next generation to be at least 3x more powerful than the current gen.

There's a difference between "want" and "thinks is feasible".
I don't believe these charts, it's way to early for accurate leaks. Plus, the last few gens at least, AMD has released the top end card first (x970/x950), so those are the specs we should see leaked first, not the next level down.

It's not that. Foxeye was merely pointing that are some people are like "I just bought a 7970, so please please please please please...DO NOT let next gen's LOWLY mid-range cards be faster than it, or I gonna cry!". Quite frankly this kind of thinking is a bit twisted, as IF people getting 88xx cards that are faster than 79xx card, it is not like their 79xx card would become suddenly slower in games than when they bought it. The only thing that's probably of concern is probably the 2nd hand value of the 79xx cards would dive quite a bit below the new 88xx cards, but who cares about that. Would take better graphic improvement progess over people being able to sell their cards for a £40 more any day.

While that is true, and although I have not read any interviews with AMD's GCN designers, I did read somewhere (sorry can't remember where) that the design team said that they had 'learned from Pitcairn' implying that their priority was to make a follow-up based on Pitcairn rather than Tahiti. So x870/x850 first is entirely possible.

What I find hard to believe about this rumour is the strong DP performance. For gaming DP doesn't seem to matter and the focus of 8870/8850 should be gaming without a huge compute overhead - similar to GK104 but a bit more balanced.

It wasn't like that at all. I was merely stating that I bought the card now thinking the 8 series wasn't going to be released till next year as that is what had been said. 8 series can be as powerful as it wants. My 1st post in this thread shouldn't be took so seriously, it was far from serious.

First rule of the Graphics Cards forum. 1: Always be serious!.

:p

My 7970 comes tomorrow and it would be annoying timing for me as I'm getting a second 7970 in a few weeks along with a new system. I'm hoping that there will be more information regarding the new AMD cards by then so I can see if buying the second 7970 is a smart move. My own fault for adapting late but least I missed out on the poor driver experiences such as BF3 and high prices of the 7000 series.

It would be nice for the cards to come back down in price to reasonable levels at launch though.
