Hi,

My machine previously had a SATA HDD and I then atempted to install an IDE HDD as well. Now when I boot up I get

PXE-E61 Media test failure check cable.

I've completely unplugged the IDE device but I still get the error.

Any ideas?

Hmm, do you have the IDE drive set to MASTER? Make sure you set the SATA drive to first boot priority in bios.

Does your SATA controller require drivers? Could an option in the bios have changed, IE the SATA "Mode" ?

I'm going to have to go through the BIOS and see if there's any obvious.

Thanks for your help so far!

I had a similar problem recently adding SATA's to an existing IDE setup, problem being the IDE wasnt set as master, even if your SATA is main set the IDE as master. (not changing any sort of SATA jumper btw!)

Hi Guys,

Still not having much luck with this. I've set all the BIOS settings to default, and I'm still getting the same problem.

I've checked the jumper setting on the HDD and that is set to master.

Any other suggestions

Do you have a ide CD/DVD drive on the same cable? If so, check the CD/DVD drive is set to slave and not master.

Well here is the situation in full.

Originally I had an IDE DVD Drive and a SATA HDD and it booted up fine.

I then plugged in an IDE HDD ( Set to slave) on the same cable as the DVD Drive.

Then I started getting the error message.

I then unplugged the IDE HDD and I still get the same error.

So would the jumper setting on the DVD drive make any difference.

IDE Optical drives should not be linked with an IDE HD drive ( on same cable ) it slows the HD down.

Two IDE Optical drives linked are fine one as master one as slave(as mine are set up )

Two IDE HDs linked are fine (one as master one as slave )

SATA HDs and SATA Optical drives should all have their own cables to their own respective sockets on the MB.

If you do link a DVD and HD on the same line then the HD should be Master( but not recommended)

SATA drivers are not needed as they get installed with XP. Or they can be installed from Mobo disc.

Wrong

Make sure your IDE hard drive is set to Master, and your IDE DVD drive is set to Slave. Or better yet, put the HDD on the primary channel and the DVD drive on the secondary channel.

If you're going to put them on the same wire, make sure you do it properly. With the 40-wire cables, the Master Drive should be in the middle connector, set as slave. And the Slave Drive should be on the end, set as master.

With the 80-wire cables, the master goes on the end, irrespective of whether you use Master/Slave or Cable Select.

Make sure you've got your BIOS looking at your SATA HDD before the IDE one.
