HDD data transfer

I've built up a budget system for my son. The HDD is only 40gb and would like to change it for a 500gb sata drive i've brought.

Is it possible to install the 500gb drive and then transfer everything off the old one so that windows and all the programs still work?

The term you need to search for is "hard drive cloning", google should give you lots of hits for various tools.

I've used an Ubuntu live CD in the past, like this guide suggests:
