HDD Failing...

My drive is a Seagate 200GB IDE (ST3200822A) used mainly for storage.

I started having a few Disk I/O errors in windows, but in the case of the MP3s it would eventually play them if you kept trying.

I tried to copy everything off to another drive, with a few Disk I/O errors here and there, I kept trying with all other folders. Next day, still had loads to copy, I copied all and it all went fine, no errors, as fast as you would expect.

I format the HDD again, and copy the files back, it copied pretty fast, although towards the end a few files slowed a bit and would make the video I was watching (from another HDD) jerky.

Tested it with an Error Scan(Quick) in HD Tune, had a few red blocks, did it again after I checked all my other HDDs, and the drive came back with all green.

Dying? Any other suggestions to try?

BIOS is up to date, and so are my chipset drivers etc.

chkdsk (/f etc) has always returned ok, even when the "issues" were occurring.

I haven't changed my IDE cables yet, I remember last time I had issues it was this stupid rounded IDE cable I was using.

Doing a full scan using HD Tune first, half way and things are still okay.

Anyway I can find a drives serial number from in windows? So I can check its warranty whilst its scanning (I think this is a 5 year warranty unit).

WD for the Serial? I got it off the drive now, but will check the software again to test the drive. Although it doesn't show the serial for the drive I want, only the 37 and one 750

Just going to run DLG now, but something strange that also shows in SeaTools

I have 4x750(sata) and 2x200(pata) inc a 37gb raptor

They show up like this

1 Seagate ST75064AS (SCSI) (SMART Not Available)
2 Seagate ST75064AS (SCSI) (SMART Not Available)
3 Seagate ST75084AS (SCSI) (SMART Not Available)
4 Seagate ST320022A (SCSI) (SMART Not Available) < - this is the only IDE
5 WDC WD360GD-00FLA2 (SATA) (SMART Pass)
6 ST375064SV (IDE) (SMART Pass)

1-4 show "Warning" in the Properties under Health Status.

4 (the problem drive) passes WD quick test.

Okay, spot the problem...

Also I noticed that SMART Monitoring wasn't on in my BIOS for one of the SATA chipsets. I've enabled it now, but neither SeaTools or WD Diagnostics shows SMART capability.

More pictures sorry, although files currently seem to be copying to the drive fine, Event Log is showing large amounts of Warnings...

With that amount of errors I'm guessing you'll be reduced to PIO mode soon, which means lovely 2MB/s speeds for you :(

So have you replaced that cable now? Did it sort the problem?

I replaced the cable at the time of the first image, so all them Event Log errors are with the new cable.

Primary IDE Channel shows 1 drive, in UDMA (I assume my DVDRW)
Secondary IDE Chanenl show no drives (Current Transfer Mode are both Not Applicable).

Just copied 16gb to it this morning, no errors :/

My old PC runs on a hard drive that every so often has ntfs/disk errors (mine are red errors, not warnings like yours). I had to edit the registry to stop it going into PIO mode.

It's been running perfectly for about 2 years now with the errors

Maybe try a low level format, if that doesn't work then you should backup and buy a new hard drive. Maybe use your current problematic drive as a backup drive or something?

I was going to use something to do a low level format, but, my drive has disappeared. It shows in HD Tune, but shows as 103GB now

It's under warranty, so I could still just get it replaced. I will get new drive sometimes anyway, waiting for 1.5s to come down so I Can replace the pair of 200 for 1.5s
