Hi all,

I've picked up a virus on my Windows 7 machine and I don't know how to get rid of it.

I keep getting Windows notifications saying 'CRITICAL ERROR' and a program called HDD Fix is launching itself and is telling me my hard drive is corrupt. Having Googled this I now know it's a trojan/virus which tries to get you to purchase software to remove it.

There are a few pages which show you how to delete it, but lots of them are saying you need to purchase software as well, so could well be part of the whole thing.

I don't know what to do. I'm doing an Avast scan now. What other anti-virus software can I download to sort this out?

Thanks

Malwarebyte's Antimalware is a good place to start. I would also give the free Eset online AV scan a try too. I find Avast is pretty lacking as a decent AV, so it might be time to look at Avira or MSE!

Thanks Sirius. I'll probably look at buying some AV software now. I've always been very ignorant about this kind of thing but I want to be safe from now on. What's the best software to purchase? Or are free apps better?

I run MSE and Malwarebytes along side it each without any problems, they both do there job without me having todo anything with them (Malwarebytes needs to update manually but that's nothing)
