I currently have three external USB drives which I'll call 1, 2 and 3. I can only connect two of them at one time because my laptop has a limited number of USB ports.
So. Last night when I shut the computer down with hard drives 1 and 3 connected, everything was hunky dory. This morning before switching the laptop on, I unplugged drive 1 and plugged in drive 2 and then switched on. When Windows booted, I opened drive 2 in explorer and it showed the label and file system of drive 1. I couldn't access any files. It kept throwing up errors about the recycle bin being corrupt.
Maybe I should have unplugged the drive and tried reconnecting it but instead I started a CHKDSK /R operation which is now going to take 20 hours to complete.
Any ideas as to what happened? I no longer trust that drive anymore so I'm going to have to use it as a temp working drive instead of holding important data. BUT was it Windows itself at fault and the drive is fine or what?
