HDD light constantly flashes

This morning I had the following issue.

At first boot, the pc froze at the bios post screen. I rebooted and it started up fine but the hdd/cpu activity light was on full all the time, even after it had finished all the startup process.

I restarted again, again it started up fine but the light now flashes on and off at one second intervals, Ive never really paid much attention to it before, so cant really say if its normal, does it sound normal?

Can you hear the disk being used? When did you last do a virus check?

Just done a virus scan and its all clear. Cant really hear the drive. Resource manager shows only taskmgr as using any cpu, constantly at 1%.

I saw something online about PC polling the DVD drive, so I disabled mine and the flashing every second stopped, but is there any other way to stop it constantly polling the dvd? Im using XP
