Hi peeps,

Just installing a new HDD as a virus destroyed my last hard drive. Ive plugged it in and installed XP but the hard drive is classed as Local Disk :H but i need it to be Local Disk :C

So basically how do i change it to :c drive instead :h

Im not 100% if you can do it through the operating system, most of the time changes like that are made when installing your OS for the first time. You can chose what OS gets installed to what drive etc.

However give this a go. Right click on 'my computer' and go to 'manage'. Click on 'storage' in the drop down menu, then on 'storage managment', right click on the drive you want to change and then select 'change driver letters/paths'.

I think thats what you had to do in XP if I remember rightly.

Never had to do this myself, but that looks like the correct path :)

i just tried it then.. but when trying to modify the driver letter it didnt work..
also when right clicking on the :C drive below the :H drive on the screen and pressing add it asks me to create a new folder.. inside the :H Drive..

can anyone give me a walk through on just how to get the :H drive to become :C

many thanks, Will

EDIT

the letter :C is already Accompanied by another driver.. so therefore i changed this.. however it does not grant me the option of changing the Hard Drives original letter, although with my other drivers it is quite happily allowing me to change them to any letter not used

thanx Will.

If there is already a drive called C:, you will need to call that one something else before the C letter is released for reallocation.

I have changed it, I have disk H then removable disk B, D, E, F and then CD drive is G.
When i try to change it a message comes up and says 'Windows cannot modify the driver letter of the system or boot system' :/
