HDD reads constantly when Vista screensaver is activated

Odd.

Maybe Vista is realising that the system is idle and it's choosing to re-index the file searching stuff, and run a scan of the system with Windows Defender at the same time since it's realising that since the screensaver is up, the computer must be idle?

Or at least that's a wild guess, couldn't find anything on google to show why a hard drive would be very active when a screensaver is on unfortunately :/

It's in Services.

Tho it's best to have it enabled. It will die down when it's finished indexing everything.

I just disabled it about an hour ago simply because i was sick of the noise. Why do you say it's best to have it enabled? Does it actually improve performance in a noticable amount?

Well it dramatically speeds up searching for items on your computer for one thing, ie. you can type whatever you want into the search field in the start menu and it pretty much comes up straight away instead of having to run a system search and it making the noise that it would during the screensaver stuff then instead :)

It only improves search times. I've always had it turned off in XP and searches aren't exactly slow, so it's nothing vital.

Search in Vista is great.

You just hit the Windows key and start typing the name of the file you want.
