Never seen this before, bought a 400GB (b-grade) hard drive and have just got it installed. However, its saying there is only 127 GB of space... ???

Make sure you are running an up to date version of windows (such as Service pack 2 on windows XP), and make sure you have the latest version of bios for your motherboard.

Go into disk management and expand the partition. As said above XP without any sp only detects up to 127GB. With Sp1 or 2 slipstreamed in it would automatically go for the full drive.

Well the extra space is there (its unallocated), but theres no way to extend the partition. I've lookde around the internet and it seems I'll have to fork out cash for some software to do it for me.

It is, but I have know idea how to work it. Downloaded gparted-0.3.5.tar.bz2 and got no further...

Download the GParted ISO

Burn the image to CD.

Boot from CD.

Pray.

I include this last step as GParted recently started telling me it wouldn't repartition my XP drive on the fly. I'm hoping this was because it had Windows on and was a bit iffy, rather than any problem with the drive itself...

what os are you using?

should be using xp sp2, if you're on xp, if not then slipstream it into your cd, takes about 15 mins to copy disc to C:\xpcd, use nlite (or manually) to slipstream the sp2 exe, then use nlite to reburn it to disc (or manually)
