hdd started making tick tock noise

turned on pc today and one of the hdd's has started making a noticable ticktock noise, well more like a Dunk-dunk noise, its about every 3 secs.

is it on its way out? which prog to check life.

ok this one is abit weird, when i noticed the noise it was sorting stuff with the cpu checking temps etc, once i closed down all the progs i noticed the noise stop.
reopening each prog to see which was making noise i found that when i open hwmonitor the hdd makes the noise, close it it stops.

any reasons why it would do this?
