HDD Stress Test?

Hi,

Is there any kind of linux program that can test the stability of hard drives?

I have a couple of older ones and im not sure if they work fine or are semi-dead, i was think of something that writes out random data to the drive then verifys its integrity several times over?

and hdparm for detailed info.

hdparm -tT /dev/yourdisk will give you timings on cache and disk

# dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda

will write random data... no idea how to verify it though (it's random!!)
