Hi.
So my friend is away to finish his pc build next weekend when he recieves his psu and hdd and he is wanting to take some stuff from one of his old hdd but the problem is that hdd had a virus which stopped him using his pc completely (this was a years ago and don't know what virus it was but he had no protection). Either using the ide cable or usb converter cable is it possible he can infect his new hdd when moving stuff across? Cheers

Depends if he ran and executed the virus or not. Before coping any files across, use a good AV scanner, such as ESET NOD32/Smart Security and give the harddrive a full scan.

If you would rather not boot into Windows to scan the harddrive and just want to scan the drive on it's own, just connect the drive and a CD drive up then download and run Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 from CD.

Do mean executed on the old hdd? And what do you mean the virus needs to be executed? As in that hdd needs to be the primary boot device? Im clueless on this stuff.

Yeah a Virus needs to be excecuted (ran) in some way. Usually on a boot drive it will be excecuted on startup or on a scheduled task. Since you are not booting from the old HDD, no files from it will be loaded into memory.

As mentioned, it probably is wise to run a scan on the old HDD anyway just to make sure that the files your friend wants are not the infected ones.

I mean ran from the harddrive. Ie: you plug in the harddrive, browse to the infected file and run it.

A good AV should keep the machine clean, but do a scan if you want to be double sure.
