Hey,

this is on behalf of a friend who has found an item for watercooling his HDD's. i've done some searching and found the dangerden stuff etc. but that ain't it. i will copy his description. first one to find the item gets a gold star (incentive or what!)

so here we go:

I'm busy building a pc, and i found a really great reviewed enclosed water cooled dual Din Hard drive cooler. Problem is, i simply CANNOT find it anywhere now and i forgot to favourite it All i remember is that it fits two Din's and has a name scribed into the front which is visible on the exterior and i think its silver (i was planning on spraying it vinyl black but it actually might be balck and i've forgtten )

cheers,

you dont need one ..... why on earth would you want to water cool your hdd !!!! ...... if ocuk dont have it then dont ask for where to find it .....

i know i don't need one! its for someone else who is building a project pc that aims to have some great looks.

i see people asking for stuff that isn't sold by ocuk aswell as asking for advice on things outside ocuk.

also why are there several watercooling HDD solutions if there is no need for it?

to jaykay,

matches the description pretty well i'll see what he thinks. cheers for having a go!

Ive seen one of my drives reach 55c, not good. They regularly go higher then I'd like them to. In a passively cooled system, hdd water cooling could be usefull.

Also some performance drives do run hotter I think

Since when do harddrives get that hot? Mine never go over 30C. Some people...
Seen my last 150GB raptor reach over 75c went it was in my shuttle...

I don't think my shuttle sn26p liked being used while it was shut in a cupboard :p it got a little on the hot side...

i think my mate wants it more for its looks side although he has informed me it is going into a case with few fans so passive cooling will have some benefit.

thanks to those who have taken the time to look into it,

Josh

Read somewhere about a study saying hot hdds are not necessarily data death traps waiting to happen, usually the weaker ones die out quickly regardless of temperature, could be madness but it did have some valid data to back it up. Also they sell hdd cages with quiet 120mm fans that're much much safer than watercooling it.

The report you're thinking of is by Google. They recorded the temperatures that their hard drives were running at and how soon they failed and produced a report on it that can been seen here.

They actually found that cooling the hard drives excessively causes them to fail a lot quicker, and that there isn't a huge correlation between heat and hard drive failure.
