You can a HDDVD player (Toshiba HD-EP30) with 7 free movies for £70 now.

I'm think of buying one to use as an upscaling DVD player.

Are they region free?

Correct. HD-DVD is free, normal is not.

There is talk of a firmware update to make it DVD region free.

I went for the same deal from play and I think it was a total bargin.

Bought a few more HD-DVD's for peanuts as well.

It not like it going to stop working now that BR has won, still 400+ titles out or coming out.

Surely an upscaling bog standard DVD player is cheaper though?

Yeah, but most of the cheap upscaling players aren't as good at upscaling. The EP30 is a very good upscaling player that just happens to play HD-DVD's as well (and you can get them on the cheap now).

Seen the Ep30 for £60 now and very tempted. Not sure if it still comes with the 2 free movies though.
Anyone got a good source for cheap HD movies?

that is a good deal. Don't get a cheap upscaling player for heaven's sake. I have done that myself and they don't upscale anywhere near as good as a HD-DVD player. Cheap components = cruddy results (well, for most things). I have bought several cheap upscale players and none of them compare to an EP30 (which is the HD-DVD player I own btw :p).

if you can get your hands on a ep-10 or hd-e1 they can be made multiregion with a firmware and like its been said better than a cheap upscaler especially when they are the same price, and search you can pick up hd films from 4 pound which is great
