Hi guys, my brother in law has just come into possesion of an old Pioneer PDP-501MX Plasma, which has VGA connection and component connection.
He has a PS3 and atm can only get standard def to the plasma, as far as I can tell this is an HDCP issue as the plasma is very old.
Would I be right in thinking that this thing would allow him to get the HD signal from the PS3.
Not sure I can link to site due to competitor rules but a quick google for HDfury will get you to the item in question.

This screen does 1280x768 so you can do 720p, but it wont contain the firmware logic to tell the PS3 that its a 720p set, the only way to get it to work is get a VGA output cable from the PS3 (does the ps3 even have a vga cable like the 360 !?), and set the screen res to 720p, it still wont be pixel perfect it will be stretched slightly.......sorry the tv set is just to old

PS: It wont do it via componant, unless the tv set has RGB + componant inputs (5/6 cables like the 360 has)

As far as I can see that is what the HDfury does:

What is HDfury ?
HDfury is a tiny external add-on card/adapter that you can hook up on any RGB display through its SUB-D HD15 Female Input.
Once screwed, it becomes a "part of the display" itself and will permanently perform an outstanding HDCP modification. Therefore, you can connect any HDMI source in Full HD 1080p to your now "enhanced" display hooked up with the HDfury module !

Why do I need HD(720p) or Full HD(1080p) ?
Well, you don't need it. But you may want it ! (Read our Introduction to HD)
HD-DVD&Blu-Ray players, HDMI graphic card, PS3 and X360 Elite, SAT receiver and HDTV channels set-top-box, all of them are able to unleash their true potential (720p/1080p mode) only through HDMI output.
If you want a valid ticket for the Full HD world you either need a compatible display(with HDMI input) or a solution for your existing display. (Read our HDMI/HDCP definition)

Why do I need a HDCP compliant display ?
HDMI is a new standard that comes with hardware protection called HDCP.
If your display doesn't have a HDMI input you won't be able to display 720p/1080p signal on it (from HDMI sources)
Prior to exchange Data Video, HDMI source is exchanging keys with HDMI display.
Both have a special HDCP chip embedded. If your display doesn't have it, even if it's technically able to display 720p or 1080p signal, it will display a BLACK SCREEN.
On Playstation3 for example: 1080p mode is only available through HDMI output
Read about the HDCP display's nightmare and find out if your display is affected.

What can I do if my display is not HDCP compliant ?
You can buy a new display with HDMI input or use a HDCP stripper/converter box
They will extend video link to a "man-in-the-middle" device which will remove HDCP protection and output Analog RGB
Some issues with those HDCP stripper/converter box are the following:
- They need extra wires, such as Power Supply, extra analog cable.
- Most of the time, switches or settings need to be tweaked.
- Quality is limited and restricted because of longer analog link (need of VGA analog cable)
- They are not compliant to HDCP rules as they allow easy access to decrypted analog video.

What are the advantages of using HDfury ?
HDfury is the world's first device that you can screw directly on your display.
HDfury will add a Digital Input 100% HDMI/HDCP compatible to any RGB display !
Pocket Portable HDCP stripper, that you can connect to any VGA input.
It will transform any analog RGB input into a fully digital compliant HDMI/HDCP input up to 1080p !
Digitalize your Analog Screen !
Shortest Analog Link as possible also ensure Highest Video Quality as possible !
Alu and Gold platted materials,
It can be used and sold legally to transform any RGB display into a HDCP compliant display.
It does not require external power supply to operate.
Unlike other HDCP stripper solutions on the market HDfury is compliant to HDCP rules it does not allow and end-user easy access to analog decrypted signal.

Just looking for some reassurance before I splash out on it for him :)

I can't comment on specifics for your display, but I can certainly vouch for the HDFury.

For some months (after I got over my initial disappointment that there isn't an official PS3 VGA cable), I was content to use a cheap PS2 Component cable with a VGA converter I already had. It had umpteen fiddly dip switches ("You can't switch quicker than a dip switch flicker" :) ), needed it's own power, plus had noticeable picture shift.

After finally convincing myself that £50 was justifiable for a cable (R6 Vegas 2 will have to wait :( ) I took the plunge with the 'Gamer Edition' which is a simple one piece cable with HDMI on one end, VGA on t'other. No external power required.

I'm happy to say the quality is great on my projector - component quality was decent but definitely crushed the midtones in comparison, and overall sharpness has certainly improved. As a bonus, now I can access the HDMI options (such as DVD upscaling) which were previously locked out.

AFAIK the VGA output is standard, so 'any' VGA monitor should accept it, but whether yours will prove troublesome due to either resolution/refresh rates etc, I cannot say....

I went ahead and ordered the 'gamer edition'
So I will report back and let you know :)
atm he connects with the PS3 hdmi to 3 pin component cable which only outputs standard def, I presume an HDCP issue.

It is still coming out of the HDMI at the back of the PS3 though before bieng converted to component, would that not make a difference?
Or upon further reading it could be that the 5 bnc component and vga connections are the only ones capable of carrying a HD signal on this set, not the 3 pin component.

...sorry, not quite with you there... you're converting from HDMI to component???

I thought you were using the PS2 style component cable which connects to the proprietary Sony AV port.

If not, you really should try this first to see if you're happy with the cheaper option...

i think there's confusion going on here ;)

you describe 3pin component - which is just wrong... if you are referring to red yellow and white, then you actually mean composite, which is in no way as good as component.

Sorry guys my mistake, only seen the set-up once on tuesday :)
It is actually a 5 pin cable 2 Audio/3 Video coming from the AV out.
I think the problem lies with the plasma, I have included a link to manual below if anyone fancies taking a look.
I think only the 5 BNC Component and the VGA connections are HD Capable not the 3 RCA Component connection.

Anyway I have gone ahead and ordered the 'HDfury Gamer Edition' to go from the PS3 HDMI out to the Plasmas VGA Input.
In the manual on Page 61 & 62 it states that the VGA input can take RGB and Component and lists it as bieng able to accept both 720p and 1080i.
Fingers crossed eh :)

Well fitted this for him on Friday and it works a treat, lovely 720P for games and also upscaling DVD
Fantastic piece of kit for those with older TV's and no HDMI.
Highly recommended :)
