plug it in to a 4k hdmi 2 monitor, if it does 4k/60hz then its hdmi 2

According to my googling and Wikipedia, HDMI 2.0 support was added to second generation Maxwell. The chart suggests that the 960m is based on first generation Maxwell.

Looks like you need a 965m or above for HDMI 2.0.
