Hey chaps,

Basically I have access to both, although I don't have a HDMI cable at the moment so I can't test. Now, I can't for the life of me find any tangible information as to which is generally better for gaming/blu-ray 3d on a 1920x1280 resolution monitor.

The sound is not an issue as I have a sperate sound system, but I've heard that HDMI 1.4 has a huge update in terrms of 3d development? Which is something I am leaning towards. I have a DVI cable in now, and it looks great, however I have nothing to compare it to. It seems that DVI is pretty stationary in terms of development? As HDMI has had versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and now 1.4.

Would like to know what you guys are using, and what you would use if you had a choice? In addition to some pro's and con's to using HDMI 1.4 as opposed to DVI.

Cheers,

Steve.

I started out by using HDMI but changed to DVI. I found that HDMI was good picture quality and in gaming it was just as good as DVI however when I quit my game and went back to the desktop my resolution changed so it was a right hassle. I then tried my DVI and haven't had any issues at all.

when i use dvd my blue ray copy protection kicks in and wont load it works fine with hdmi, I think its to do with whether the monitor supports hdcp, if not the dvid-d port wont work with bluray

HDMI - recently listed in a weekly Computer publication as one of those things that is not really required

DVI is my first choice as far as picture quality is concerned. I do use HDMI but only so that I can have one of my rigs connected to one of my monitors used by another rig using the same monitor. Hence, no crawling around under the desk changing leads over!

Side by side comparison... I would say marginal at best, with slight edge to HDMI which really is down to the graphics card that you are using. I will qualify that by saying that the display was slightly better with ATI than NVidia.

As you say sound is not a issue in your case and remember carrying a sound channel is fine if your monitor(s) have a good speaker system otherwise sound quality is poor to say the least.

Last of all.... remember that a £5 HDMI cable will be just as good as a HDMI cable costing 8 times that much with "gold" plated plugs etc. It's JUST a cable and all the sales pitch of super fang tango shielding etc is exactly that sales bilge :)

Unlike Analogue where the signal is variant on many environmental factors, a digital signal is constant hence DVI, HDMI and display port are identical in terms of display output. However, they differ in bandwidths so HDMi is capable of higher resulotions.

HDMI version 1.4 = 10.2G/bps providing 8 channels for resolutions of up to 4096x2160 at 24 Hz.

Dual Link DVI = 7.92Gbits/s providing resolutions upto 3,840 × 2,400 @ 33 Hz

Would you like to expand?

If you have a single 1920x1200 resolution, the three are indentical.

if you have a single, 8-bit 1920x1200 display.

if you have a 10-bit 2560x1440, DisplayPort is the only best way. :D

with shift in larger displays, might as well buy a displayport monitor.

You're right at 1920x1200/1080 all 3 are the same, but displayport has the ability to deliver much higher resolutions, higher refresh rates and higher colour bit rates
