HDMI Cable Display Question

Hi Guys

I currently have my computer connected to my 40" HDTV by VGA as I haven’t purchased a HDMI lead yet. Connected by VGA I only get a max resolution of 1024 by 768, if I buy a HDMI cable would I be able to get a better resolution?

Thx

You should be able to output higher resolutions than that via VGA. I have a PC hooked up to my 720p 32 inch HDTV which is outputting 1280x768 quite happily. DVI/HDMI shouldn't make any difference to the resolution - the same way a PC monitor will accept a max resolution whether it's via VGA or DVI.

HD is just a marketing term - 1280x720 is the minimum accepted HD res, something which VGA is certainly capable of outputting. DVI/HDMI is not a requirement.

Do you not have any resolutions available higher than 1024x768 or does the TV just refuse to display them?

Im connected at 1600 x 1200 and Im on vga, Im using a radeon 9550 at the moment :p really old card lol check if your computer is getting the edid information from the tv, mine isnt and as a result its not displaying across the whole of the screen.

sorry for thread jacking but im in the same situation. Im on my laptop with a 8400m gs connected via vga, and i can only get 1024. If i try the next one up the tv just shows a black screen. Is this because of the vga or my gfx?

Thanks

It all depends on what the specific TV will allow over the given input. The computer and cable are always capable.

I can get 1920x1080 over VGA. It's upto the display and output on your card, not the cable. Some laptops do have a limited resolution on the VGA output.
