God knows what Microsoft did with the xbox360 1080p support...Hardly any TV's support the 1080p output...Including quiet a few of the 1080p sets..

(Don't know if a HDMI cable is ever going to come out for the xbox360..or if it's even possible for one)

it will do 1080p over vga and component but they disable 1080p for component on movies as it violates some rules or something

Currently, there's still no official word on a cable coming out. So you'll be stuck with 720p or 1080i for movies via component.

I thought there was a third party one coming out around xmas.

My tv dosent officially support 1080p through VGA, but it does work, if your tv is a full 1080p set its worth trying out (sony Bravia W series 40").

Without a software update, I doubt there'd be a decent way of doing it, other than taking the VGA signal and converting it into a digital HDMI signal, which can probably done in an expensive AV amp, but on a cable, I doubt it.

I think this is the way a few people on Avforums are running there xbox360 on there sony 1080p LCDs...

But as davey has said...Companys are charging an arm & leg for any of there AV amps that have HDMI switching..
(not all AV amps with HDMI can convert a component signal to HDMI)

Actually i believe over at the AV forums someone confirmed that the X and W do accept 1080p over vga but only for the 360 and not for pc.

I can't confirm this myself but it has been mentioned quite a few times over there which surprised me considering i followed those topics closely and decided against the sony for the very reason that it didn't accept 1080p over vga.

It's worth asking about at AVF ;)

Sorry that i couldn't give you a definitive answer but i stopped reading those two topics over a week ago and my god do they grow, so it's hard to keep up :p

But i just had a quick search through the Sony W topic at AVF and now i'm not sure at all if it can output @ 1:1 1080p through vga on the 360

HD-DVD doesn't have a HDMI port so no cable will be forthcoming. Mainly because the 360 will do 1080p via component and VGA. As someone else mentioned, however, 1080p will be disabled when watching HD-DVD's through component meaning it'll only do 1080p for games.

VGA will be the way to go so long as your TV supports it, which it doesn't.

It does definetly work, i can take some pictures of my W running 1920x1080 on VGA. It is queer that it works for 360 but not on pc though, thankfully thats what hdmi ports are for :p

Just make sure you buy the official VGA cable, as the 3rd party one i got was washed out and now is used to tie my dressing gown together.

Cant see any difference in games though between the component at 1080i and the VGA at 1080p, the only reason i got it was to free up my component for the wii.

I was thinking since theres a VGA cable, couldn't you use an adaptor to convert it to DVI and then use a DVI to HDMI adaptor...? If it works, quality would probably be a bit shifty plus you'd have to hook up sound through the optical separately.

I doubt it would work (at least not cheaply), as whilst it's true DVI can carry an analogue signal in addition to a digital one, and you can get DVI to HDMI adaptors they are only connection adaptors (just the physical connection not the signal), and would not change the signal.
Basically you would need an active adaptor to convert the analogue VGA signal to a digital signal.

I suspect what is more likely is that at some point MS will release an update for the 360 that activates a currently unused digital output (i'd be suprised if it doesn't have the circuitry*), and a DVI or HDMI cable at the same time.

*After all DVI has been a standard in PC video cards for 3-4 years and I suspect wouldn't cost anything to include in the 360 if it shared the same multipurpose connector as the componant/composite/vga/audio does at the moments.

The release of the HD-DVD drive is slated for the 1st of December. The reason for Overclockers ETA is more likely to be due to intial stock having been already allocated to other retailers.

thats good then would still like one of these
