HDMI cable or card issue?

Tried to use my projector last night and used the same HDMI cable but this time with a HDMI to DVI adaptor as the new card did not have an HDMI port. No signal detected, tried all settings - still nothing. Swapped DVI ports still nothing on the projector (monitor worked fine when connected on either port).
Thought it may be a problem with the projector. Tried the projector with a VGA cable (has also a VGA port) all ok. Tried with a shorter HDMI cable directly from my laptops HDMI port and all ok. So no problem with the projector.
I suspect the problem is with the long HDMI cable (5m) but can't understand why it happened now when everything had been fine previously. Could it be an adapter issue (tried two without any success) or do HDMI cables just give up at some point?

Might be the adapter?

You could stick with VGA, unless the projector manufacturer cheaped out on the VGA components it should be just as good as HDMI.

Will need a longer VGA cable for this which I am not sure if it is going to work either (both cables that worked fine - HDMI and VGA - were the usual 1.5m ones).
