HDMI -> DVI-D 1440p

I have the DGM 27 IPS which has 1x HDMI, 1x DVI-D, 1x DP. My gx card is MSI 670. The card is connected with a DVI-D cable to the monitor. I also use my monitor with a 13'' rMBP using a DP to thunderbolt cable which works just fine. The problem is that with the DVI port, I won't see any signal on start up until windows login screen. I had a 560Ti before and this DVI cable was working just fine with the card and same monitor but the DP in 560Ti gave the same problem. So I know the DVI cable is ok.

I wonder if I use HDMI to output signal from the 670 and connect it to the DVI-D port of the monitor (assume I could find the cable), will that work? Or HDMI simply cannot work with 1440p at 60Hz? It is HDMI 1.4a on 670 port and 1.4 on the HDMI cable I have. All I need to do is to find a HDMI-DVI-D converter. If this does work anyone know anything about the converter? Thanks
 
Single link DVI can't transfer 2560x1440@60Hz, because the bandwidth falls short. Dual link DVI, on the other hand, could.

Unfortunately, HDMI solves the bandwidth issue with a different approach. As a side effect, it is always single link. And thus you can't combine dual link DVI to it. At least not without some sort of active solution, which would cost an arm and a leg, if one even exists, in the first place. In other words, with DVI-HDMI you're limited to 1920x1200@60Hz.

As for HDMI-HDMI: bandwidth-wise, HDMI is indeed able to transfer 1440p with the v1.4 iteration. But the main problem is that it requires this for the whole pipeline (GPU, cable, monitor). From what I found, your DGM's HDMI is v1.3, so it only supports 1080p. It is actually quite common that it's exactly the monitor which lacks the v1.4 HDMI, while the rest of the system would be fine.

Don't know what to say about the start-up problem. First place I'd take a look would be the bios (for example, my bios has something like "Primary display device", with PEG, VGA and what-not as options). If you have another monitor, you could then check the bios with that and try different options.

Thanks. Sadly yes DGM has only 1.3. My MB is P8Z68-V and I will have a look at the bios setting in a min.
 
Do you use them both at the same time?
Do you need to see the bios on every boot?

Little bit of a faff, but could you rig up an extra DP cable to use with the laptop (so you dont have to keep going behind the PC, only the monitor)
Or, what i did when I only had Dvi, was put an extra hdmi cable in the PC... When needing to boot to bios, remove Dvi, insert hdmi, when done in bios swap back

Not that I would use them at the same time, nor would I need to see bios on every boot. But frequently switch cables might wear out the connector? Just wondering is there a better solution than switching cables all the time? If not it is still ok for the time being :) cheers
 
Probably no use but have you tried pressing delete to enter the bios when you think it would be right?

I run the same monitor via 7950 and found that the screen was blank until the windows screen . Moved to dp connector (mini for gpu & fullsize for monitor) but still had same problem.:(

Read somewhere that if you could 'time it right' then one can get into the bios by pressing delete and found that it works!!:)

Never been sure that the move to dp did anything as I did not try pressing delete until after the switch over. (Do not want to spoil things so have left well alone)

So this is quite a common issue with different cards :/ Anyone has any idea as what caused the problem? For me the DP of the card works flawlessly.
