HDMI-DVI help needed on HD2400 pro

I bought an HD2400 pro (the passive one) for my media pc as I wanted a silent solution that combined video and audio into one cable (yep - I now know what the difference between pro and xt is  - it'll be getting swapped next week)

I have a 'premium' hdmi cable attached to my panasonic 1080p tv, going through a belkin hdmi(f)-dvi-d(m) plugging into the dvi socket on the GFX card.

But I get nothing - windows doesn't see the TV and disconnects it everytime I try to select it. I've tried through CCC and through the standard windows settings, every time I select 2nd monitor it de-selects it when it refreshes as it thinks there's nothing there? I don't think it's the cable or the adapter, but will have to test them - anyone think of anything simple I've missed?

(Edit: Tested the cable and adapter and both are fine. The dvi out on the gfx card works fine through a dvi-vga converter onto an old monitor. - what else could it be?) - I thought it could be a max-combined-resolution thing so tried it at 800x600 on monitor and 720p on tv - no joy.

Connected my 2400XT HTPC up to a Sony Bravia KDL26T3000 for the first time today (using a standard hdmi lead and the supplied DVI-HDMI dongle.)
All I had to do was select the correct external source from the settings menu on the TV and that was that. I did have to change the resolution to match the HDTV (changed to 1360x760) as it automatically changed to 800x600 when it first connected but that obivously only took a few seconds.
When you change to the 2400XT, hopefully it'll be that easy for you!

Well, the plot thickens. I have ruled out the cable, the converter and the TV's own Hdmi conection. (works fine when plugged into my laptop). Both the DVI and the VGA outs on the 2400 pro work fine and I've had them both running at 1920x1080 simultaneously on my 2 screens. I know the card is recognising the cable/converter as when I boot with it plugged in I get this:

So I've run out of ideas entirely?

I am running the latest drivers (had 7.11 and just had an auto-update). The hardware end-to-end seems to work fine. The only thing left is to try a re-install either of XP or migrate to vista (what the laptop is running) - I just can't believe this is a driver/software thing - but for the life of me I have run out of options - Anyone have any ideas, however wacky?

Now I have to admit that there is something wrong with my install of XP - I had to repair it and ever since it has been stuck in an update loop - it downloads the updates, fails to install them, moves onto the next load etc... so I suppose something could be messed up but... If it will drive 2 monitors concurrently at huge resolutions, why won't it drive my TV?

your PC will be trying to force a funky refresh rate like 59.9hz

TVs tend to be more picky about refresh rates than monitors.

It's claiming 60Hz in both the CCC and the desktop settings. I even used 'force HDTV' settings in CCC which default it to 720p @ 60hz and that made no difference. (interestingly there was no 1080p option in there, only 720p and 1080i - which is odd) I know previously I found that CCC did some funny things in certain cases, so maybe there is a setting buried in there somewhere - just seems odd that it all works fine on the monitors. Anyone know of any other hidden settings that might be forcing a non-standard setting down the wire? Really pulling my hair out here!

Just to add to that - I gave it a go on the laptop and tried 60hz, 59hz, 30hz and 29hz and the TV displayed them all flawlessly (yay Panasonic :) ) So I don't think it's a refresh rate issue. Really running low on ideas here now - thanks for the help so far, keep them coming!

hmm you've got me stumped now

so whats the differences between your laptop and the XP machine

nothing apart from the graphics adaptor then ?

Well - GFX cards, and operating systems. I would simply blame it on a damaged install of XP pro, except for the fact that it runs both monitors fine? I, like you, am entirely stumped. I am planning to upgrade the machine to Vista anyway, so I might just do that and see - just hate to throw good money after bad if that's not the problem.

On my HD2600PRO, I had to use one of the CCC's presets and play around a lot with the settings. Also, the dongle I got did not carry sound, neither did the one with the 3870XT. In the end I had to source a 2900XT one to carry sound. I had to do a lot of tweaking as anything which was HD looked absolutely gorgeous, but low resolution stuff did not look too great over HDMI.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be a CCC problem - can you remember any of the settings? I know the nVidia control center did wacky stuff with frequencies above a certain resolution which caused problems - not seen anything similar in CCC though.

Oh well - 2400 XT and Vista 32 bit are ordered - should be here tomorrow - always use a sledge hammer to crack a nut I say! ;)

Well - so much for the Sledge-hammer.

I have now installed Vista (32bit Home Premium) and the new Gigabyte HD2400 XT and still have exactly the same problem. No monitor recognition for the TV.

I had a sneaky suspicion that I hooped up on the converter so I did a bit more research. Turns out that I was mis-sold the dvi-hdmi converter - far from being a DVI-D dual link, it is actually the single link (so no good for sound). According to the literature, I also need to use a dvi-i for combined signal, so I will have to try and source one of those.

It still doesn't explain why the card won't run the TV though - I have changed the OS and the Card but it still doesn't work - the only difference between the Media machine and the laptop now is the CARD - using a 7950GTX on the laptop and the 2400 XT on the media machine. Once again I am completely stumped - anyone got any ideas - will try anything at this point

Because it helped me:

EDIt: And SHAME on gigabyte for not including the adapter - cheap, cheap, cheap! :(
