HDMI/DVI or Display port?

fairly sure displayport offers the highest resolution.
hdmi is the weakest connection, offering 60hz over 720p or only 24hz over 1080p, while both dual-dvi and displayport can send 120hz up to 1200p, and displayport probably higher.

Almost right, but wrong on some parts. HDMI is perfectly fine doing 1920x1200 @ 60hz (I think 120hz on the 1.4 standard?), which is the same limitation as single link DVI. Dual link DVI can do something like 2560x1600 @60hz but it depends on the GPU. Displayport can go up to 3840x2160 @60hz, or four monitors chained to one port each at 1080p.

VGA is something like 2048x1536 but it depends on cable quality.

In theory yes, in practice no. There is some strange limitation with current GPU port controllers which prevent 120Hz connectivity being possible over 120Hz. It is a bit of a pain to be honest.
