If I get an HDMI --> DVI-D lead, can I use this with my 285 GTX to send video + sound to my lcd tv (over it's hdmi connection)?

Does the fact that it is not dvi-i make any difference?

I think you can, but you will need to connect the sp/dif to your gpu from the motherboard sound or your sound card.

yeah, sorry should have clarified- have got the gpu to motherboard spdif setup. Just wonderinh if the dvi --> hdmi cable would work being just a dvi-d cable. Am baffled as I thought the whole point of hdmi was to transmit sound - if dvi can actually do it anyway what's the point...

Sorry, did not read properly, I think it will work with a DVI > HDMI adapter, hopefully someone can confirm, sorry for the confusion :)

Yeah, my GPU came with a DVI-HDMI adapter that did work for transferring sound. However, there were issues with the computer not recognizing the monitor and resolution etc, so I stuck to just DVI. You might not have these problems.

It's definitely possible though. Not sure how, because surely that means DVI must carry sound somehow. Unless there was a small interconnect on the DVI slot on the GPU specially for this adapter.
