i'm getting a tellywotsit tomorrow, which has an HDMI socket on it. my laptop has a DVI port, and i have a DVI cable. (i'm such a TV noob) but am i to take it that DVI doesnt plug straight into HDMI? i've never seen an HDMI before. could i pick up a cable from my local electrical retailer?

You need a DVI>HDMI cable. They are quite rare, I suggest you grab one from cut price cables UK. (Google it)

I wouldn't have thought they are rare? Got one very easily from an online store when I got my AE900.

Paid 60GBP for 5 metres, by HAMA.

scouting round, i managed to find a DVI cable, so i picked up a DVI->HDMI adapter. hopefully this should do the job :)

do you get hdmi to dvi adapters, our tv support hd resolutions etc but was out before hdmi was the big thing.

or can i just the composite for hd tv, our new sony bravia has hdmi but not my tv witch is the sony wega 3lcd prjection one.

Rare?? Where are you shopping? Every major manufacturer offers such cables.

HDMI > DVI converters are readily available too for about £12, some con merchants are charging £60 for them but I can't see how that could ever be justified.

Composite is a no-go for HD unless you meant to say component (red, green and blue wire) in which case that's fine.

It probably is but just to make sure, is this is the same as a DVI-D Female to HDMI Male Converter Adaptor? I found these for only £5 on an auction site.

I've found more expensive variants of it which are £30 with gold connectors etc, is this worth paying extra for?

Yes, DVI and HDMI leads are male at both ends so you're DVI connector needs to be female.

No, it's a digital signal there will be no difference between a cheap one and a pricey one.
