Trying to help a friend out but he's not nearby and I don't know much about HDMI splitters/matrixes.

He has a desktop and laptop, and bought the following 4K@30HZ 6X2 HDMI True Matrix SPDIF Splitter - specifically because it has 2 outputs as most seem to only have 1. What he'd like to do is have one source output to one monitor (laptop) and the other output to the other (PC), but in extended mode for each so the mouse rolls over to the respective screens for each computer/screen. And also if he's only using one source like the laptop, it work in extended mode with the laptop open or closed.

When he's dealing with the one source, the two monitors act as duplicates and Windows display settings treats the laptop screen as screen 1 and the two monitors as screen 2 (duplicate). The question is, can something like this matrix do what he needs for both scenarios? Or is a different solution required. He's tried playing around with detect/identify, it allows more tinkering but no solution with the laptop but seems much more locked down/closed off with the same settings on the PC.

Different solution required. A splitter is just that, it takes 1 source and splits it. The splitter box will just present itself as a single monitor to the PC.

I’m not sure if 2 devices can multiplex along hdmi … I doubt it.

That device you linked is just basically a selector switch where you can have 6 inputs and decide which of those the 2 outputs show.

Your friend needs to connect multiple displays independently to the laptop. So hdmi port is one, potentially usb to hdmi adapter for a second one ?
