HDMI or Component on PS3?

My mate has just bought my 32" Mirai HDTV off me and I was looking around everywhere for my spare HDMI cable but couldn't find it - I did find out my component cable though and threw that in instead.

I was wondering what the official word is on the difference between the two. Is it true he wont be able to play BD films in HD via component? I have checked the PS3 FAQS thread but I'm still not 100% clear on the whole thing!
 
It depends on the tv really, my tv for instance looks far better through component as with hdmi i cannot change the sharpness (i assume its a glitch with the tv?)
 
If the TV has a HDMI connection it's best to use that as mentioned above.

Also a cheapish HDMI cable works the same as an expensive one as it is digital so either the image is good or very bad.
 
If your TV has decent component connections then the difference is minimal. Saying that the point about a £3 HDMI cable having the same quality as a £60 component cable is a very good one.

Not strictly true because of "sparklies" but generally yes this is the case.

I'd be interested to know the exact limitations of a PS3 via component too, as if I ever get one that would be the connection I would use (unless I got a new TV with 2 x HDMI sockets, already have one device that would take one up)

Well that was an option, but would just rather have to buy as little as possible :) *EDIT* - how cheap are you talking? Unless I'm searching for the wrong sort of thing they still seem expensive? (£50+, either a 2 into 1 adaptor or entire splitter box)

While this thread is here, can anyone confirm that a PS3 works with a TV that has HDMI 1.1 inputs? PS3 is HDMI 1.3 AFAIK, is that an issue?
