HDMI-out to DVI-in?

I've had a bit of a search but nothing's turned up that I can see, so sorry if this is old hat...

Basically, got an oldish LCD monitor, which has VGA and DVI-in sockets.

Of course I can connect up my laptop and play DVDs through that, but it's quite a faff, and the laptop sometimes struggles.

Would like to just get a small DVD player, and hook that straight up to the monitor itself (nope, I have no normal telly!).

Have realised that older/cheap DVD players are no good as anything they output would need upscaling and some real signal/frequency fiddling to play via VGA on my monitor, so I'm hoping that HDMI is a more useful connection which translates more easily to DVI, as it seems you can get plain adaptors.

Possible? Or clutching at straws?

It all depends on the spec of the monitor's DVI input. The specific things you are looking for are...

1) will it handle a 50Hz signal via DVI... (most want nothing less than 60Hz)

2) what happens if there is HDCP copy protection on the source signal from the DVD player

The other thing you might run into is that bog standard LCDs won't be happy with a TV resolution such as 720x576 (Pal). In some ways HDMI can be more limiting than VGA as its expecting a hi definition source (either 720p, 1080p etc). Typically monitors don't like a DVD or BluRay source aas I don't think the cross communication about possible resolutions and refresh rates is any where near as comprehensive as a computers (if it has any at all).

So to be honest I think you'd be better off buying a cheap 1080p tv, as the gizmos you'd require to make this do what you want would probably be more expensive.

is this the same?
if not then apologies

we have an older 42" plasma that has dvi, component and vga connectors.
we have our ps3 running to the telly using a hdmi/dvi adapter.
but dont forget that dvi doesn't carry sound.
we have a ps3 wired to stereo system for sound
and the picture is fine
