HDMI output stopped working.

Hey peeps,
Yesterday my laptop crashed (alienware m17x) and it seems that the hdmi output has stopped working. I have tried installing intel drivers again, played around with Nvidia control panel and its not showing in device manager.
I have tried plugging it into a different T.V without success. I'm starting to think that its a hardware issue however my laptop installed a windows update yesterday so im not 100% sure.
the only output im getting is analogue (vga) connector. I have also had a look in bios to see if anything in there could help but there isn't.

anyone got any suggestions on this?

While the hdmi is plugged into tv and laptop if you right click desktop and select screen resolution does it allow you to select a different monitor?

Have you ruled out the cable being at fault?

yep it doesn't show in screen resolution however it says that there is something plugged into the vga port. also tried a different hdmi cable to no avail.
 
No luck with the GPU drivers, also i thought that the i thought that the VGA icon popped up when i plugged in the hdmi cable, however, i was wrong that only showed when i switched to 'extend' on the projector settings. Nothing shows when i plug in a hdmi cable.
