HDMI over WIFI? (not chromecast or like)

I've had a google and there seem to be some things but I have no idea what I'm looking at and some seem quite expensive.

I have a chromecast v1 and it's okay but a bit of an arse at times streaming 1080p local files, AKA 90% of my library. So I'm just wondering if there is a dongle I can plug into my gfx card and another into my TV and just have it appear as another desktop.

There are many reasons why the chromecast could be an issue but I won't be able to do much about that until I replace the system, seems I can stream 1080p online content without issue so it really looks like an issue with my local machine so no need for chromecast fixes :D

PC wired or wireless?
Is there a lan cable that can reach to your tv, or is only wireless available?
Is it only for movie playback?

Hi Lude, cheers for the response.

Just wireless at the moment. TV is wall mounted and a lan cable would be impractical. Only for movie playback yes mate.

you have a smart tv? all you need is a wifi dongle for the tv and stream the movies from your wireless router/pc to the tv

im using tversity,if your tv aint smart you can buy a cheap android dongle to make it smart

Just asked a similar question in another post. I can recommend the wdlive boxes, although the 2 I have did start randomly freezing months down the line. Going by my recent experience with the junk emish x700 from android I would stay clear on them. Interested to know what you decide on, as I am also looking for a new box.

They both seem like chromecast type applications to me. What I'm really wondering about is a set on HDMI wireless dongles that together act just like a HDMI cable, they don't rout through a router, they would communicate only with one another and would be seen by the system as though they were just a monitor/TV connected by a HDMI cable.

I'm not sure if it's Smart, not 100% on what that feature set entails, I'm pretty out of touch with AV tech, it's about 5 years old or so has no lan or wifi inbuilt, fanciest thing it does is auto wake when sent a stream but only if the CC is powered externally as the onboard USB is not on in standby. I'll be getting a plug socket with inbuilt USB terminals to correct that at some point.

what I meant was aslong as your tv supports a wifi stick/dongle or internet cable then it should be hard to wirelessly stream movies to it from your pc

you cant do it via hdmi unless you had your pc sitting next to your tv and did it that way

How are you actually playing your movies to the chromecast, looking at the instructions you have to use a chrome browser window or a mobile app?

Something like the Microsoft Wireless Display?

I'll look into that.

Yeah, you need a few plugins, Videostream is one or AirFlow is a small program that does the same outside of a browser. There's also Plex but I'm not looking into that one until I have a new system and a better organised library.

Ahem. You may fare better with a PowerPlug / Powerline on the TV to get wired to it. You can also buy a wired ethernet adapter for chromecast, which you can plug into the PowerPlug adapter. Else if it's a smart TV then maybe just plug directly into the TV itself. It really depends. Another option would be to buy the new version of the Chromecast, which has a faster build in Wifi / Wireless AC.

Due to the nature of intereference on powerplugs and wifi, etc. It's not possible to be sure which of those is best, until you actually have tried them out for yourself. Wheras if it's your PC then it would be more likely to be a software or operating system-related issue.

I think I'll re-evaluate after the base system upgrade, everything seems to work too like the chromecast or is just to fiddly, I'd have an easier time routing a 20m HDMI lead up into the roof space and down into the TV ha. Cheers anyway guys this will have to keep bugging me for a few more months.

Did you look into Microsoft Wireless Display, it looks too me like it is exactly what you want?

Plug the MWD into your TV, set it up with your PC and then it just mirrors your desktop. Perhaps get one from the rainforest so if it's no good then send it back?

the microsoft wireless display is pretty good tbh. didnt try it for video though, but good for streaming desktop and presentations. I have no complaints about my chromecast 2 streaming anything from my server :)

I used to use plex server on pc and plex app on a now TV box at the tv which steamed flawlessly via my home wifi.. but ofc this is no good if you actually want to see your desktop as well :)
