HDMI can only be used for HDTV resolutions which is 720p (1280x720) 1080i/p (1920x1080) any higher and it wouldnt run through HDMI correctly, some graphics cards will downscale the image to 1080 but if connecting it to a HDMI device it will only list 1080p as the maximum resolution

ok thanks for that. also if i were to connect my pc to it using hdmi can you get a dvi to hdmi that will take in sound? or would i output the sound through the optical out etc?

ATI certainly have graphics cards that will output HD compliant protected video and audio through their DVI connectors (some also have hdmi connectors).

Specifcally the ATI 2xxxx sereis outputs HD compliant protected audio from dvi through hdmi. They usually need a specific special dvi to hdmi converter to activate the audio feature. The audio format is good but may not be the best for your other AV equipment. Encoding of the source material may also be a limiting factor.

On those cards if you just use a dvi to hdmi cable you will get video that can be set to HDMI resolutions 720p etc. You use separate leads from any sound output. This will gerally work unless the source material is protected content.

I typically have no problem outputing TV & DVD matterial through my ATI DVI output in a 720p video format with analogue sound from the soundcard to separate speakers. Have yet to try protected content though.
