hdmi port

some people use monitors for Xbox360 / PS3 with HDMI.
It's also possible to connect camcorders via HDMI.
If it's a DisplayPort, that's even better for when you have HDMI/displayport on your video card!

Extra devices like a Blu-Ray player, PS3, Xbox360 or HD Digital/Freeview box.

And since many modern PC graphics cards these days support DVI-HDMI or native HDMI connections, you can even have a second or third PC up especially if one takes up each connection, VGA, DVI & HDMI.

If the monitor has speakers (Which are usually crap anyways!), then you will get sound through the HDMI cable too.

And if your monitor supports it, HDCP content protection.

extra option for future options.

think about it: VGA for your laptop, DVI for your PC, what if you want a PS3? do you want to keep swapping cables?

a good HDMI monitor will also have audio-out for HDMI, so if you have a 2.0 speaker system, it's cleaner to simply use HDMI from PC, and then a short cable from the 2.0 speaker to get the sound from 3.5mm or optical out. (my T240 have both)

also HDCP protection for Blu-ray players, which is a must if you want to view any HD stuff from a player.
