HDMI problems on 290X (VGA info also)

I am building a new computer to take the place of a media pc and games rig.
Here is my original post I buy the parts tomorrow.
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18622341

The old media pc was based around an Nvidia 660ti, it was connected to a 19" monitor and the house TV a 47" Finlux 100hz LED 3D tv, Monitor connected via DVI - D, Television via Nvidia DVI-I to TV VGA port (1920*1080p) always looked perfect on both screens (clone of desktop) and so easy to do with Nvidia.

Now the new build is using my game rig 290X, Radeon cards no longer do a DVI-I and I do not beleive DVI-D is compatible with a TV VGA. So I bought a good quality HDMI cable and used the DVI-D to my 24" monitor, the HDMI cable to the TV.

This is where the problems begins, firstly radeon does not even recognise my 47" except for as a Generic UPNP monitor, the hdmi image is horrible, especially text it is all pixelated and bitty, nothing like if it was through a VGA.

I am building the machine tomorrow so any advice of tweaks or what I can try I would be very greatful, also does anyone know if we can not get this working perfectly if there is a way I can convert the DVI-D on a 290x card to DVI-I or VGA.

Take a look here to see if it's a scaling issue.

You don't want to go via analogue if you can help it, something else is ruining your picture and I think the above is the most likely candidate.

HDMI sucks for this reason (or DP on nVidia) at 1080p. I still like DVI-D best as it doesn't involve explaining this kinda stuff to people, though for really high-res screens we do need to move on :'(

I had the same issue with my 280X, the image quality was dire through the HDMI. My monitor (which is actually a Samsung TV) was only recognised as a Generic PnP monitor.

I switched to DVI-D using an adaptor (my TV only does VGA cable) at the card end and the image quality is great now (well good enough for games, desktop etc but I will be changing this TV to a proper monitor in a few weeks).

I have exactly the same problem with my HD 7950, I simply cannont get higher than 720p out of the HDMI port. It seems to be a driver issue as the BIOS has no problem displaying at a higher res, it's only as Windows proper boots that the limitation kicks in.

No idea what what causes it but my suspicion is an HDCP issue, but the strange thing is the DVI port has no such problems.

the only way I can force higher than 720p out of the HDMI port is to hack the registry but I can only get that working for the monitor, the TV refuses to co-operate. So the TV is plugged into the DVI port via a DVI->HDMI dongle and the monitor is plugged into the HDMI port via a HDMI->DVI lead.

It's nuts.

I agree it is a strange issue, I have tried many of the tweaks and yes it looks okay but only okay, if I put my nvidia 660ti in and use the DVI-I link to the vga connection on my tv it is perfect resolution and clarity both in picture and text.
