HDMI / Sound Issue with onboard

I've just set up a HTPC using the Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H mobo which has onboard ATI Radeon HD 4200 GPU.

I had it connected originally via HDMI to my TV and I was able to get sound output. I've now got an Onkyo amp and 5.1 speakers but I can only get 2 channel audio. I've looked at my sound properties and the Realtek HDMI Output for the ATI HDMI only says 2 channels supported.

How do I get the PC to recognise that I have a 5.1 system connected so that I can make the most of all the digital formats?

sound card? optical output? possibly?

At the moment I'm only using onboard sound which according to the mobo specs is Audio: ALC892 8-channel High Definition Audio CODEC.

Have tried connecting to optical but didnt get anything there either, not sure if the amp might be set up correctly for that as I was going for all hdmi

OK so I've enabled pass through to allow 5.1 sound through the HDMI and I'm not getting sound from all speakers as per test except for the front two
