Hi, sorry if this has been covered before but I would just like some technical advice to see if what I plan to do it viable.

Usual thing, bought new TV for downstairs, old tv is now in bedroom.

Don't want to pay sky for multi-room and don't really need to watch different things.

So I have a Sky HD 1TB Box. I would like to split the HDMI into 2 streams and then send one of those upstairs via Ethernet as I already have an Ethernet cable installed to the bedroom. Would love to do it wireless but I don't think that's quite available yet!

Now I know I don't want to buy cheap splitters etc but at the same time I am not prepared to spend hundreds to do it.

Here is what I have found which in specifications alone say can do the job I require;

Splitter - http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/hdmi-splitter-32587.html

Ethernet - http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/hdmi-cat5e-cat6-extender-30m.html

A few questions;

I assume the Ethernet extender will still carry the audio, is that right? (Doesn't have to be 5.1 or anything its only going into a Stereo TV)

Do you think the splitter will be sending both signals out at the same time or will it be one or the other? & do you think it will be auto switching. (Both TV's are 1080p)

Thanks in advance for any advice you chaps have! ;)

This is basically to save me having to run an RF cable round the house and would be much happier receiving HD upstairs too.

Edit - Just one more thing I nearly forgot is that one of the HDMI's is going into a Passive 3D TV so the splitter would need to support SBS 3D

Edit - Just found this which confirms Sky 3D Support! http://ukhdmi.com/1x2-hdmi-splitter_QQ102948

Couple of points:

1) To get 1080p upstairs you'll probably need cat6 cable or face potential problems
2) You need two runs of Ethernet for any HDMI extender as far as I'm aware

Not suggesting you get this one but it details the setup you require:

Also yes, as far as I'm aware most, if not all, HDMI over Ethernet support audio.

Thanks for pointing the 2 cables thing out I completely missed that. If I have to rip out the exisiting cat 5 cable and add 2 cat 6 cables would I not be better off just running a long HDMI.

Not measured up yet but I think the Cat 5 that's in now was either a 20 or 30 metre cable. Will HDMI go to 30m?

I was looking to do a similar thing last year, and found some HDMI over Ethernet boxes that required only 1 Ethernet cable. They were a little more expensive than the two cable models but they are supposed to work fine.

There are a couple here

Also something to think about, if you have more than 1 HDMI source you would might want to use upstairs, (Bluray, Xbox etc), take a look at a HDMI matrix rather than a simple splitter. They allow you to mix and match your inputs to your outputs, so you can have all TV's watching the same input, or different inputs.

Yeah I know what you mean but I really doubt I am gonna need more than 1 HDMI upstairs, its only for Sky.

Looking at the cost and the fact I have to re wire regardless, I may be looking at just buying a 30m HDMI with built in repeater. As it will be easier than running 2 Cat 6 cables and cheaper than a Cat 6 extender with one cable.

Seems like a lot of hassle to me... I know you said you don't want multiroom but can you not say to Sky that Virgin are offering you XXX amount for whatever channels + an extra box? Sky will probably come up with a counter offer and give you multiroom for a reduced amount + free installation.

Worth a try.

It is a little hassle but I quite like the challenge, I have only just upgraded to get sky 3d, I am not usually lucky enough to get offers when trying to cancel, usually just say ok bye then I'm left in the dog doo. LOL

Well all the kit is ordered now £110 + (Some Postage) in total which is more than I planned on spending but things just seemed to mount up. LOL

This is what I went for in the end;

Splitter + 1m HDMI Lead - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neet%C2%AE-SPLITTER-Amplifier-Display-Shipping/dp/B001D9P1OW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312368912&sr=8-1 (£36.90)

20m HDMI - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cable-Tex-C...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1312369104&sr=1-1 (£32.99)

Remote Control Extender - http://www.amazon.co.uk/PowerMid-XL...?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1312369160&sr=1-10 (£20.95)

Sky HD 1tb Remote Control - Ebay (£18.50)

Will post back to let you know if it all works!!

Be interested about this as I am going to be doing something very similar but perhaps on a bigger scale once i move house

Got all the bits other than the 20m HDMI, Splitter seems to work ok but not tried the second output yet. The PowerMid's are a bit hit & miss at the moment. Got them working but sometimes it misses the odd button press and the receiver is hard to place so the sky box gets the signal. Not sure why as other devices like the TV work without missing a beat not that I need the TV to work.

More to come.........

Well got the 20 meter hdmi cable yesterday and the install is all done now, it all works like a charm. Really pleased I made the effort to do this. Had to drill a large hole through one wall but all went well.

Even the remote senders are working right now I have positioned them better. Thought I'd figured out why I was having problems, my wireless house alarm system runs on the same 433mhz as the remote senders. But it all seems ok all of a sudden.

Hi all

Considering doing something similar in a new house I'm buying

Question - is there any way of being able to watch different channels on each of the TVs? I'm told there's a thread somewhere on the forum that claims this is possible, but I cant find it!

Cheers

I wouldn't say so not using a splitter and HDMI extension. Both TV's would always display the same signal.

Ultimately HD on the main TV, then another Sky channel on the upstairs TV that doesnt have to be HD.
I begrudge paying for multiroom although I will if I really have to

Hhhhmm, I would say not possible with 1 sky box. You would need multiple feeds from the dish, ie a quad LMB. You could get that done without Skys knowledge but I don't know if there is a way of tricking the Sky box to work without subscription, I don't think you can, all I'd guess you would get out of the 2nd sky box would be free channels and you might even need another sky card to go in the box to get that.

Hopefully someone else will come along who might have more knowledge than I do about these things, there could be a way round it for all I know.
