I've got a laptop which has a HDMI output and I need to connect it up to a DELL monitor, which only has sockets for VGA, DVI-D and Displayport.

I bought a HDMI to Displayport converter, but it doesn't work, I did read that not all DELL monitors support HDMI signal through the Displayport.
Would a HDMI to DVI-D converter work?

Yes as its the same thing really but with a different plug.
Displayport is a different animal. You can get away with displayport from a pc to hdmi/dvi on a monitor because the GPU sends a DVI signal over the wire.

There are also "active" cables that do converting. They cost more.

Yeah, I have VGA>DisplayPort adapters that turn off after a few minutes - there's some kind of signal reporting from the monitor to say "I'm here, keep sending data" with DisplayPorts that earlier sockets don't use.

I'm using a passive adapter - the more expensive active ones should solve this, but money.
