HDMI to HDMI problem

I've been using DVI on gfx card (R9 280x) to HDMI on tv and the picture has been perfect but the screw pins on the cable seem to be too short so it won't screw into the card which means our dog keeps knocking the cable out. I've just tried the HDMI to HDMI instead using our old sky HDMI cable and the picture is appalling. I don't believe it's TV related as I'm using the same HDMI port that the other cable was plugged in to. Other than buying a new DVI to HDMI cable and hoping the screws are longer is there any way of fixing the image quality over HDMI to HDMI? I've tried resetting the default CCC settings and fiddling with everything I can find. I usually run at 1920x1080 @ 60

"Old sky HDMI"

It might not be rated for the HDMI version used by the gfx card.

Have you got a newer, better HDMI cable that you can try?

Forgive me if I'm wrong but as HDMI cables are digital there's no variance. They either work or they don't. This cable was working fine with our sky box until I unplugged it a few weeks ago. Googling seems to indicate this is a common issue but no-one has found why. It seems to me that it has to be the gfx card side of things and only affects the HDMI out not the DVI.

Cables can vary a bit but probably isn't your problem. At 1080p on HDMI, both nVidia & AMD cards may get a bit keen and change some settings they probably shouldn't, more info available here

Thanks guys. I've tried another HDMI cable now and same result, also I'd already changed the settings that last article recommends. I don't think a new DVI to HDMI cable will sort the issue out with the screws not reaching. I've just remembered I used this same cable with another card and had no issue screwing it in so I think it's the screw bits on the card itself. I'll have to find some way to stop the dog knocking it out (he likes to lay under my desk when I'm sitting at it).

Any idea if I'd have similar problems if I used the mini display port on the gfx to HDMI on the tv instead?

You could try...

get the little screw bolts off the back of an old gfx card, or something similar, and use them to extend the current ones on the r9.

worth a shot.

You are a genius! I took the bolts out and swapped them for a pair off an old card (pays to keep hold of stuff sometimes instead of selling it) and it's now perfect. The internal diameter on the bolts that were causing a problem were much bigger than the screws on the lead, they were just pushing in rather than screwing. Bolts off the old card are a perfect fit.
