HDMI to TV problem.

I decided to post this in the graphics forum rather than home cinema as i'm pretty sure my issue relates to my Asus 6850 direct CU graphics card.

I recently bought a panasonic TXP50ST50B plasma TV. It has 3 HDMI connections but no VGA. So I have connected to graphics card a samsung T240 via DVI and a 10 metre HDMI (v1.4 i think) to my TV. When i plug it in it gets recognised by windows and i hear the connection sound. In CCC i see my TV recognised also and i set the TV to "Duplicate" my monitor and hit apply. My monitor automatically adjusts it's res (native 1920x1200) to a compatible one with my TV from 1200 to 1080and then all i get on my TV is a blank black screen. :(

If i plug my PC into my TV's HDMI 1 socket when i hit apply my TV makes the effort of trying to display my desktop by auto switching to this output mode. (only HDMI 1 has auto switching) But it still only displays a black screen.

I have an asus sound card in the PC is my issue coming from the HDMI connection is asking for an audio signal as well? Do i have to disable my sound card and use the graphics cards sound to use a HDMI connection in this way?

Or is there some other really obvious setting in CCC i have overlooked? Or maybe need to do something from within TV settings?

I have wired dozens of PC's to TV's and never once had a problem but this is starting to make me pull my hair out. (what's left of it)

Any ideas guys?

Have you clicked, detect displays?
Read somewhere to switch to extended then back to duplicate.
Audio will come from gpu, you could try dissabling your sound card.

But i would be inclinned to try another. Hdmi cable, any will do. (do this first to save a lot of time mucking about with settings)

yeah i have already tried a different cable. same result. i don't know if need to use a specific version of HDMI cable but the 2 tried were new ones. v1.4
tried switching from dupe to extended also . no luck.
Infuriating.
I'm going to order a DVI to HDMI adapter and try plugging that into my 2nd DVI slot on my card then the HDMI into that. I know this won't send audio but i already have audio connected to my home cinema amp via sound card anyway. and can't help but feel a DVI connection to my TV will fix it. Worth trying i thought for £3

Any version of hdmi will do to get a picture.
Does your home cinema amp have hdmi inputs and an output? If it does plug pc into there and then output to tv.

Not actually tried hooking up to my tv(panasonic tx p50gt30) with new card, switched from nvidia to amd, will have a go tomorrow.

You do know its gonna be something really simple!!

And have you tried doing it just using the desktop, Right click, display, screen resolution and check box to make your monitor primary display

I know it's going to be something simple! that's what makes it all the more infuriating hah.
Right click, display, screen resolution and check box to make your monitor primary display isn't highlighted and when duplicate is applied the check box for it disappears completely and is replaced by "This is currently your main display"

And yeah I have tried with only HDMI connected to TV. Still nothing. The HDMI connection between the PC and TV is recognised in windows though as i said. It lists my TV in CCC. It's strange.
As your TV is very similar to mine i will be interested to see if you have to do anything in your TV's settings to get it to work.

Also no HDMI on my cinema amp :(

Just noticed that my graphics card is under the load of two displays. So it's trying to output it. or it is displaying it as far as it's concerned :/

tried that.

I just googled "Asus 6850 HDMI problem" and it seems there are people with the exact same problem as me and it's card related but the problems seem to all relate to MAC and not windows. There is a solution for MAC users but no joy for me. I can't be the only one with windows having this issue.

Right from what i have been reading ithink you need a display port adapter either to hdmi or dvi.
Most threads are saying you cant run either 2x digital or 2 x analogue from the card but you can use 1 of each for dual, unless you buy a display port adapter.

Have you got a dvi to vga converter? And vga lead, if so plug into lower port on your card, and to vga on your monitor, then try hdmi to tv, that should work.

Is your tv shown in device manager??

OK that is making sense to me now and is along the lines of what i thought the problem would be (why i thought of buying a dvi to hdmi adapter) I do have a DVI to VGA and a VGA lead so i'm going to try it now. In CCC my panasonic is listed and detected properly but in device manager under monitors it's listed as "Generic PnP Monitor" If that makes a difference?

Thanks Nickolp1974 for your help. fingers crossed this will work. will report back soon.

No joy. All i achieved was a blue screen :/
Some of the CCC settings and it's appearance changed when i pluged VGA into DVI 1 but still nothing different to before is displayed on my TV. I really need to rule the TV's settings out so i have a friend bringing his laptop round later to connect to it to rule this out.

If this is a card issue relating to what this card can or cannot output i will be very annoyed with Asus. The packaging of the 6850 direct CU leaves you in no doubt this is a great card for multi monitor support for the modern day. How can they make such a modern card that is advertised as "eyefinity" when all i can do is plug 1 digitial input into it! But as not even the VGA fix seems to be working i'm thinking this card just hates HDMI all together. I'm wondering how i would stand on returning this card after 6 months as it's been sold to me as a product it isn't. Nothing on the Asus packaging or user manual warns of compatibility issues with connections. In fact, the opposite. To me if there are pictures on the box showing 2 DVI slots a mini display AND a HDMI port i would expect to be able to use at the very least 3 of the 4 (eyefinity after all) 2 would be bad enough. but 1!? and then adaptors for any more that aren't even provided! I find it hard to believe Asus would do this.

Right. I spent the afternoon using various screens and EVERY connection configuration possible with the adapters and cables on hand. Here are the results..

First i have to correct my own previous post concerning the Asus 6850. It is packaged with a DVI > VGA adaptor but this is no use for HDMI issues. The other thing is the backplate has engraving next to the dvi ports and on the dust covers of the DVI ports saying that the top port is DVI and VGA and the bottom DVI port is DVI only. So there are hints kindly provided by Asus that there might be something more lurking beneath.
Note: there is nothing On the Picture of the ports on the box about connection compatibility issues or in the literature provided but there is a nice little *Specifications might not be exactly as shown. which is assuring and nice of them.
Joe public off the street shopping for a graphics card might pick this box up and be quite misled by this packaging.

Inside the box is no more clear of problems you might incur.

After the hassle of moving my half ton Case to another room to try on another TV i 1st tried connecting both DVI 1 to monitor and the HDMI to an LG TV. Set to Duplicate. nothing. Rebooted. As the PC began the boot process the TV tried to display the desktop (brief hope) i could see the windows logo and intel but it was all covered in a mass of green vertical stripes which was very wrong and i think as soon as windows got to the part of loading the cards drivers it went blank black screen as my panasonic showed. So the only difference here was that the LG TV showed about 20 seconds of a really bad picture.
I then tried as you suggested and plugged the DVI > VGA adapter into DVI 1 plugged this to my monitor and once again with HDMI to LG TV. Exactly the same result as before. Green interference stripes for a few seconds and nothing.

Lastly The only real and final productive test i could find was to unplug everything and plug PC into another monitor with just a straight HDMI cable (another different cable btw) Select HDMI from source on monitor and nothing. Nothing.

So. I now know it is 1 of 2 things. The card or my settings have got screwed up in CCC with all the tinkering under the bonnet i have done trying to fix this. I don't think it is CCC though as im sure i would have at least seen something of a picture displayed by now. even if was pure luck by stumbling on something but nothing at all. I'm hoping i'm wrong and there is still a simple setting change needed.

As far as i can make out the HDMI slot on my card just doesnt work at all in any way without an adapter put in it and even then i don't know if it would work. so this would make it a faulty card (although i think its looking more a fault of the card then a faulty card more and more)
My final easy fix hope is the DVI > HDMI adaptor and with the bottom slot saying DVI only i might need to put my monitor into that slot and the adapter with the HDMI cable in the top. BUT If i can only have 1 digital connection then i would have to have the DVI to VGA adapter in the top slot. (to monitor) the bottom slot being DVI only i doubt would accept a DVI > HDMI adapter!? So there would be no solution in this scenario and i will have to move onto the Display port. Plus if that even did work i would be left with a Good monitor and graphics card connected via VGA and that in itself sucks and i shouldn't have to.

So.. The big question. Will a display port adapter fix the problem? if so am i right to be a bit annoyed about all of this or am i completely off track and should have understood this prior to buying? All i want to do is plug 2 devices in and i thought HDMI was standard with everything video these days? If by buying a DVI to HDMI adapter works i will be happy for the cheap fix but i will still be annoyed that Asus wouldnt include something like that which would cost them next to nothing to include especially if the HDMI slot is useless. Display port adaptors i appreciate cost more.

Doesn't look like OCUK have any display port to HDMI adapters either. :(

Does anybody think i should remove CCC and drivers and do a clean install also? worth doing to make sure everything in CCC is reset?

Update:
Taken from techpowerup review of my card.
The card has two DVI ports, one DisplayPort and one HDMI port. AMD's display output logic is clearly superior to what NVIDIA has to offer at this time. Vendors are free to combine six TMDS links into any output configuration they want (dual-link DVI consuming two links) - and use them all at the same time. AMD has also introduced DisplayPort 1.2 support with their new cards which allows the use of a DisplayPort hub to connect multiple monitors, or daisy chain them together.

So if this the Case and If i can rule out it being CCC/Driver related i have a faulty card to return. How to rule this out i'm not sure yet.
The whole thing has got really confusing for something that should be so, so easy.

Update 2:
Starting to get my head around the nature of the connections now. Top slot that could take VGA is DVI-I and bottom slot is DVI-D I now know that DVI-D only allows for digital pass through and has 5 less pins (the analogue channels) and explains why there can be no VGA in this slot. This makes me hopeful that the DVI-D to HDMI adapter i have just ordered for £1.60 (come on Asus) will put an end to all this and allow me 2 digital connections. :)

I have followed those steps from the microsoft help. Most of it is different to what options i have displayed but they were there but mainly worded differently.

Are there any recommendations on which drivers i should try? and how can i ensure i remove all traces of what i have installed currently? Driver sweeper?
This is my current CCC info..

Right just tried mine but with bedroom sammy32" plasma(easier to carry that to pc), opened desktop resolution properties and set as duplicate, NO other settings were touched, used dvi to monitor and a dvi-hdmi to tv, and 12.6 drivers.
The tv differance will not matter but the gfx card will, the thread in my above post explains this.
What i would do is contact the place where you got the card briefly explain the problem, buy a display port-hdmi connector (approx £10) if that solves it all good, if not rma the card and return the adapter, i have a feeling though that it will work.

The DVI-D to HDMI adapter i ordered yesterday arrived today. Plugged it in and bingo!
Hooray. I did order a dispaly port adaptor as well just in case this didnt work but i wont be needing it now.

What an infuriating graphics card. Pleased there was a simple fix though. Thanks Nickolp1974 for all your help. Much appreciated. :)

The moral of the story... Just because a graphics card has lots of ports it doesn't always mean you can use them all.

glad you sorted it:D, might help if manufacturers made things more clear!
