HDMI to VGA?

Quick question.. I have a friend with a HD6450 to output to 2 screens. Both screens are VGA.

A DVI to VGA adaptor isn't working, will a straight HDMI to VGA adapter/cable work? Cheers!
 
I wasn't aware that hdmi cables carried analogue vga signals. Thought it was pure digital stuff.

If this card is like mine only one of the dvi has analogue capability while the other is pure digital.
 
Looked at one but that was one that was from VGA to hdmi an required the VGA out to support digital signals. Never heard of that either.
 
Unfortunately with that kind of card (6450) the DVI output is usually only DVI-D (just carries a digital signal), not DVI-I (carries both digital and analogue signals). DVI-I is what is found on many graphics cards as it allows you to not only hook up standard DVi-D monitors, but also VGA screens using a simple passive adapter (like this). With only a DVI-D connection then using an adapter like this isn't possible (since the adapter doesn't convert a digital signal to an analogue one).

As for using the HDMI port, that is effectively a DVI-D port that carries sounds - so you can't use a passive adapter on this either.

You can buy active adapters that convert the digital video signal of a DVI-D or HDMI output to an analogue VGA one - however one of these adapters costs significantly more than a modern graphics card that has two analogue outputs.
