HDMI vs DisplayPort?

Hi all,

I have just bought a new Gigabyte 2070 super that has 1x HMDI and 3x DisplayPort sockets. What is the suggested usage here?

I currently have it running on a HDMI as I do not have a displayport lead but is the HDMI better quality or not?

Also my monitor originally used to run on my DVI cable at a refresh of 120mhz but now on the HDMI it wont exceed 60mhz. Is this a case for a new monitor or is 60mhz fine on an HDMI lead?

Thanks in advance!

Displayport is generally better for monitors.

HDMI is often limited to 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 and your hz maybe limited depending on your resolution.

I use Displayport to my Ultrawide 100hz G-sync monitor and HDMI to my LG C9 OLED TV (also G-sync)

Your in the same position as me, i have an older monitor that only does 144hz over Dual DVI, the HMDI is limited to 60hz only. If you want to obtain a higher refresh rate you'll need to buy a new monitor.

Thanks all for the feedback. It looks as though I'll need a new monitor!

Not the end of the world but not the best when I've just spent all my spare cash on the GPU haha... Oh well!

Forgive my ignorance, I'm rocking a 1080ti with a 4K 43" LG TV as a monitor (its bloody good tbh!) but it only has HDMI, I'm running HDMI with a high bandwidth cable without issue (that I'm aware of).

Having read this thread, its left me wondering if I am missing something here?

What effect would that have though?
Like fps lag or something?
Usually it won't let you run at the resolution and refresh rate of your monitor and if you force it (it is possible by creating custom resolution) you will end up with either no image, flickering breaking up picture or some image artifacts...

Both your graphics card and TV are equipped with HDMI 2.0 which allows resolutions up to and including 4K at 60hz so no you are not missing anything.
Older monitors are equipped with HDMI 1.4 and lower so might not be enough to run at high resolution and or refresh rates.

Thank you, Sir, much appreciated enlightenment. :)

This.
My issue was a 4k TV with 1.4 hdmi. And later the issue was the GPU.

try a hdmi to dual link dvi cable first, i used this on an old dell and it worked fine at higher resolutions and refresh rates where pure hdmi input wouldnt. there are options outside of buying a new monitor
