Hi Guys ,

Updated my card for the first time in about 4 years , went from a radeon x1950 pro 512 to a XFX Radeon 5850 XXX 1gb , the 5850 has an HDMI port , i currantly have my 1950 connected to the tv with the DVI to HDMI connection , now....do i go straight to the HDMI cable?? i know it has sound aswell , but i have my SS sytem connect in the input/output jacks on my motherboard . Whats the best way to go? keep the currant setup with my DVI to HDMI??

Regards

You don't HAVE to use the audio portion of the HDMI output.

It'll be better as it's one less cable.

before i got this card , i had my speakers connected to the input jacks on my mobo , now i got hdmi for audio , just need to know if there is a way to get surround sound through the one hdmi cable with my speakers? for use with movies and games

I assume you mean your output jacks?
If you were using a stero jack/output, how were you getting surround sound before that?

yeah , sorry , output! before this card with HDMI , i just connected my 5.1 speakers to the mobo! , they are not connect now , as my audio is through HDMI , but i would like it to go through my cinema speakers on my blu ray play if it can be done , what i am thinking is...if i connect my vga card via hdmi to the hdmi port on my bluray ( for the surround sound ) and then my dvi to hdmi to my tv for my pc display? can this be done?? , sorry if this sounds stupid , total noob at setting up audio stuff , just asking , trying to learn.

No, that won't work, the HDMI will have to be sending the audio to the same place as the video output.

Does your blu-ray player have a video input? I'm assuming that you have the type of blu-ray player that your surround speakers plug in to?

sorry I'm tired and prob miss read the question, you can buy a 10m and 15m hdmi cable, I use a 10m one myself that plugs into my av receiver that controls my 5.1 and my av receiver is connected to tv by hdmi so i get my pc show up on my tv and my 5.1.

If it matters to anybody i got my 10m hdmi cable from ebay for 10 - 15 quid n works fine.

so i can use the hdmi on my card for audio only and the dvi to hdmi adapter for my display only? i`m tired too , thanks for your advice , most appreciated

You've misread the question so so badly.

No, HDMI is for audio and video at the same time.

However, I'm still not quite sure what you want to do.

What is your aim, what are you trying to do with your PC that involves surround sound, what are you plugging it all in to.

You'll need to be more specific.

I am trying to get surround sound via the hdmi , as it says it supports 7.1 SS , however..the hdmi which is going from my card to my tv just kicks out sound from the tv speakers!! how do i get it connected to my cinema system? so my pc is sound is coming out of my cinema speakers? Sorry , getting way too tired , just read back some of my earlier posts!! confusing! sorry

What are you using for surround sound? Is it an AV Receiver/amp?

You need something that can accept surround sound via HDMI.

See if the TV can output a digital 5.17.1 whether this will be multi-coax or a single optical. Not many do, most only have a simple 2 channel L+R coax out. I doubt your sound system can accept input via HDMI... That's even rarer.

So for a clean setup - one HDMI for PC to TV, then one audio cable from TV 7.1 to your AV amp.

If you don't have the interconnects, stick to HDMI video only and stay with audio out of the MB to your amp. Keep it simple, unless you want to spend a lot of money on a receiver/TV/amp home theater setup. Google "HTiB" (Home theater in a box).

Unless your SS setup has a HDMI in and out, (from the PC then loop to your TV) your better off using the sound as you had it before, and just use the HDMI for the picture.
