HDR and HDMI on PS4 update

Not sure where to post this but I figured this may be relevant in this section...

The PS4 has had an update to support HDR but it only has HDMI 2.0 and not 2.0a. Howe can it support HDR then? Apologies for the noob question but I'm unsure how this is possible

Actually the original PS4 only has HDMI 1.4

Still dont get it TBH mate. Even if its upgraded to 2.0 you still need 2.0a to do HDR as quoted in the article...

Yeah but the PS4 still does not have 2.0a. Surely it would need it to output the HDR signal?

Well I stuck Netflix on my old ps4 after the update and used my panasonic hdmi Cable from my 4k player in my samsung tv 4k hdmi slot... no 4k streaming available so far .

Well of course, it won't do 4K and they've never said it would. They've enabled HDR, that's all. The two things are not mutually-inclusive.

We'll I was kind of hoping they had made an arrangement with Netflix to do hdr BEFORE the update. Like MS have

But HDR and 4k are 2 different thing. You sure your not mixing HDR up with UHD (4K) as I think only the PS4 Pro will stream 4K where as the PS4 only has HDR.

HDR is High Dynamic Range and is to do with the colour gamut. My understanding was that only 10bit panels can do HDR and that almost all 10bit panels are 4k.

So surely only 4k TVs will get HDR?

The PS4 could put out UHD at 30FPS with HDMI 1.4 in theory, but it wont work with Netflix as it does not support HDCP 2.2.

It's already been updated to HDMI 2.0 but i get your point.

Assuming your TV hasn't got HDMI 2.0 too.

You can't firmware update a physical HDMI port.

The PS4 slim and PS4 Pro will have HDMI 2.0 ports.

Yes you can. Programmable ones like in Samsung and Sony TV's for example.
