HDR look with single jpeg

Unfortunately my camera will only shoot/save to jpeg (canon a75).
And obviously I can't create true HDR photos with this, but I was hoping that there might be a way to emulate it (even if it's not so great).
I had a quick search and saw this posted by Gregeff, and this is the kind of thing I was hoping for.

In future I will of course capture 3 seperate images, but I also have quite a few single jpegs that I would like to try it with.
I've been using PS for a while now so I recon I could give it a shot with a few pointers :). Any advice/help/guides would be great :).

Try not to overdo the effect, a proportion of the HDR stuff I've seen posted here just looks wrong to me. :(

If you've got photoshop CS, tweak the levels and shadow/highlight settings to achieve the level of detail you need.
 
Indeed i do have CS, but i was looking for a bit more than tweaking the highlights etc. I agree some of the HDR photos look a bit carp, but overall it's a style that i quite like. Depending on the subject matter obviously.
Just something i'd like to have a play with :).
 
Well, I've just had a play with Gimp and I think it boils down to promoting selections to layers and then carefully adjusting each layers colour balance and contrast until happy.

The only reason I'm not going to show my before and afters is I made a mess of one bit and the photo is of my wife and she'd kill me for posting it.
 
I suppose you could make seperate tiffs (can Photomatix take jpegs?) with adjusted levels, or the exposure tool (if you have CS2), and use photomatix pro to bring them together. The result will be very noisy tho. You really need to shoot in RAW and expose to the right to get a decent HDR image from a single shot. Your best bet is to do it maunally with layer masks and/or luminosity masks.
