With ati offering a 40bit video pipelines, and a few led backlit monitors, how long will it be until we see true hdr monitors, that go beyond what brightside have demoed on consumer devices?
I've seen a prototype HDR display with something silly like 40,000:1 or 100,000:1 (I forget) contrast but I think they're some way off mainstream. The one I saw was at a research day at my uni when a number of research projects (reasonable sized teams of researchers, phds, and people from industry) were on show. They essentially had a projector sat behind a lcd screen, both putting out the same image using some lenses and stuff or something (they didn't go into a huge mount of detail). Very very clear images, especially compared to the "regular" TFT sat next to it (typical 600:1 250cdm type job)
Guy reckoned we might see HDR displays come out over the next few years but they'd be rather expensive for a while...probably not something a consumer will be buying for some time (I will now be proven wrong of course )
