HDR Problems

Hi there,

I have a 15" Macbook Pro 2016.
Radeon Pro 450 2GB
16GB RAM
i7 2.6 GHz quad core.
Catalina 10.15.7

I have it plugged in via USB type-c to my Dell U2720q. This works fine, I get full 90W delivery and 4k@60Hz.

However I can see in my Monitor's OSD that HDR is not enabled. If I bootcamp into Windows, same laptop, same cable, same monitor. I can enable HDR in windows settings and the Monitor's OSD has an icon to show it is HDR enabled.

When I go into display preferences in MacOS there is no option to enable HDR, and I can see in the Monitor's OSD that it is indeed not displaying HDR.

Anybody have any ideas how to enable HDR on my monitor? When the hardware can clearly support it.

Thanks

Hmmm, you're right that table says it doesn't support it. The question is, why? The hardware is clearly capable because using all the same hardware I can do it in Windows. On top of that the AMD Radeon Pro 450 website clearly says it supports HDR Displayport 1.4, I can see in my monitors on screen display that it is a link via DP 1.4. This seems like a complete OS/Software kneecapping which is pretty dreadful :/

Spoke to Apple support and he confirmed it. He also confirmed that it's extremely disappointing that it works in Windows but not macOS, and so is clearly a limitation of the drivers/operating system, not the hardware. He suggested I submit feedback, so I've done so. Hopefully a sympathetic engineer in the Macbook Pro team reads it and it's supported in Big Sur.
